What each one actually gives you
- Gornergrat, 3,089 m. 29 peaks over 4,000 m, roughly seven glaciers, the Gorner Glacier at about 12.9 km, a front-on Matterhorn, ZOOOM the Matterhorn and the Golden Spot. Detail on what to do at the top.
- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, 3,883 m. 38 four-thousanders and 14 glaciers across three countries, the Glacier Palace 15 m inside the ice, summer skiing and Europe’s highest viewing platform. The last descent from the summit is 15:45.
- Sunnegga–Rothorn. Zermatt’s own range including the Weisshorn, and the start of the five-lakes walk. That walk is 11 km and about 3 hours 15 minutes from Blauherd to Sunnegga, with the Matterhorn reflecting in three of the five lakes. It is a different mountain from the Gornergrat line, not an add-on to it.

The third column is the same ride as the first for roughly 60% more money, and it carries the lowest rating in the set. I would not buy it, and I say why on the summit ticket review. The cable-car product has the highest review count of any ticket I cover, at 1,304 reviews; its voucher is exchanged at the Matterhorn-Express valley station, Schluhmattstrasse 123, Zermatt, and it is not suitable for children under 3 or for pregnant travellers.
Doing both: Peak2Peak
If you want the ridge and the ice on the same day, the combined ticket is Peak2Peak: CHF 212 adult, CHF 106 reduced in July and August 2026, and CHF 165 adult, CHF 82.50 reduced from December 2026 to April 2027. Against two separate summer returns at CHF 132 and CHF 132 that is a real saving, and it is the only version of the two-mountain day I would recommend paying for. There is also the Zermatt Peak Pass, from CHF 180, covering both mountains, the Sunnegga–Rothorn lifts, the Randa–Täsch–Zermatt trains and the local buses, with the 4-day at CHF 250 in winter and CHF 320 in summer.
Watch the discount rules, because they differ between the two operators. The railway gives 50% to pass holders and free travel to children up to their 6th birthday in summer or 9th in winter. How I would choose
First visit to Zermatt, one mountain day, clear forecast: the railway, because the Matterhorn view from the Gornergrat ridge is the picture you came for and 33 minutes is a civilised way to get to it. Second visit, or a traveller who cares about altitude and ice more than about the classic silhouette: the cable car, for the Glacier Palace and the extra 794 metres. Travelling in the winter band, when Gornergrat is CHF 102 and the cable car CHF 104, the price stops mattering and it is purely a question of taste. If cost is the deciding factor either way, start with ticket prices and the verdict on is Gornergrat worth it.
