What to do on Gornergrat

The view, which is the reason you came

From the platform you are looking at 29 four-thousanders and about seven glaciers. The two named things to find are Monte Rosa’s Dufourspitze at 4,634 m, the highest point in Switzerland and the second-highest mountain in the Alps after Mont Blanc, and the Gorner Glacier below the ridge, about 12.9 km long and the third-longest in the Alps. Give it longer than you think. The count of peaks is on how many 4,000 m peaks you can see.

ZOOOM the Matterhorn, which you have already paid for

ZOOOM is an exhibition in three zoom stages: periscopes, a 3D cinema and a paragliding simulator. It is open daily 09:45 to 16:15 and it is included in most train tickets, including both Gornergrat tickets sold through GetYourGuide. No standalone price is published, so if someone quotes you one, check it. What matters practically is that it is indoors, which makes it the one part of the summit that survives bad weather. On a grey day it is the difference between a wasted fare and a salvaged morning.

The Golden Spot and the observatory

The Golden Spot is a free, year-round photo point built around the restored, gold-plated 1898-generation locomotive He 2/2 3003. It costs nothing and it is the one photograph at the summit that is about the railway rather than the mountain, which given that this line opened on 20 August 1898 as the first electric cogwheel railway in Switzerland seems fair.

Above the Kulmhotel stand the two observatory towers at 3,120 m, built in the late 1960s. The Stellarium Gornergrat occupies the south tower with a 600 mm telescope. There is no scheduled stargazing train, and I would distrust any listing that offers one.

Eating and sleeping at 3,089 m

The 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat is the highest hotel in the Swiss Alps: 22 rooms and suites, restaurants including the Glacier Alpine Kitchen and the Sky Lounge, and the Tiger Bowl takeaway for something quicker. It is pet-friendly. There is also a small shopping mall at the summit. None of this is included in a train ticket, so budget for it separately if you plan to eat up there — it is one of the costs people forget when they compare fares on the price page.

The walk down, which is what I would actually do

Take the train to the summit, look at everything above, then ride one stop down to Rotenboden at 2,825 m and walk the Riffelsee lake trail to Riffelberg: 3.1 km, about an hour, graded easy to moderate. It passes the Riffelsee and a second, smaller lake, then the Brother Klaus chapel, whose outline copies the Weisshorn silhouette. The Matterhorn reflects in the Riffelsee on windless mornings and at dusk, best in July and August. The Alpine Garden is at Rotenboden too: 2,800 m, over 5,000 m², with signposted paths, an augmented-reality layer and rare flowers that bloom in July and August only. From late June, about 125 Valais Blacknose sheep graze beside it, 20 June to 12 September 2026, 10:00 to 16:00 and best before 12:30, free with no reservation possible. Some wear GPS collars you can follow on a phone.

I will not publish a distance or a time for walking the whole way down to Zermatt, because no source gives one. What I can tell you is the height loss: 1,485 m. Plan the Rotenboden to Riffelberg section, catch the train from there, and read the hiking ticket before you buy a plain return, because it is cheaper for exactly this plan.
